In a move that could fundamentally alter the governance structure of St. Louis, Alderwoman Daniela Velázquez has proposed a major change that would transfer many of the executive powers currently held by the city's mayor to a new, appointed city administrator role.

St. Louis Alderwoman Unveils Proposal to Shift

ST. LOUIS — There’s a new proposal that would strip many of the St. Louis Mayor's responsibilities.

Many cities across the country have a form of government where there's a city manager or a city administrator who’s in charge of the day-to-day operations of the city. A local alderwoman wants to see that in St. Louis.

For the second time in a little more than a year, the St. Louis Preservation Board has spurned developers hoping to tear down three empty buildings on an otherwise vibrant strip of Morganford Road and replace them with a 36-unit apartment building. Neighbors, nearby businesses, and the alderwoman whose ward the proposed development sits in are all unhappy with the board’s denial.

Alderwoman Daniela Velázquez joins Chris and Amy in-studio for a 'Civics Lesson' about St Louis. She points out that the City is one of only 41 independent cities that doesn't sit in a county. 38 of those are in Virginia. She points out that there is a St Louis school board election coming up, but notes that the City has zero authority over their decisions.

ST. PETERS, Mo. – The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms served a search warrant on quiet Bramblewood Drive in St. Peters Tuesday looking to solve a series of arsons 2,000 miles away. A neighbor recorded video of the ATF after doing a little online sleuthing of her own.

Daniela Velázquez is now a St. Louis City Alderwoman. In 2014, she worked at the ACLU. She was a staff consultant for the Ferguson Commission. That's where she first met Aldridge, a young, outspoken activist, and Gore, a corporate attorney from one of the most high-powered law firms in the city. An unlikely coalition was forming.

Daniela Velázquez is a first-generation St. Louisan. Her family arrived in St Louis from New York City, where her parents lived the immigrant experience while being citizens of our country.

I’m advocating for Proposition V, a charter update on the November ballot. This measure will empower our city to impose penalties that reflect the real costs of property neglect. We can set new fines to scale with the severity of the violation, encouraging landlords to either maintain their investments or sell to those who will.

Sixth Ward St. Louis Alderwoman Daniela Velázquez isn’t on the ballot again until 2027—but she’s already facing stiff competition…. Or is that sniff? Nearly a dozen signs have popped up around Tower Grove South in recent weeks touting the candidacy of Shadow, a pretty pussy running for, yes, alderkitty—and her viral success has now led to at least two more local pets entering the race.

Alderkitty shakes up South City aldermanic race

Governmental leadership is among the few major areas of American life where professional training and experience isn’t necessarily viewed as a necessary prerequisite for the job.

That’s changing in a lot of cities — and it should. Even when an elected man or woman “of the people” does happen to have real-world experience (meaning, something outside of politics), it’s seldom experience specific to governmental management, which presents distinct challenges from private-sector management.

Editorial: A city administrator system could take the grubby politics out of St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Could the City of St. Louis benefit from a city administrator to execute the plans of the Mayor?

St. Louis City Alderwoman Daniela Velázquez believes so, which is why she recently proposed Board Bill 162, which would change the city charter to create a Department of City Administration to be directed and overseen by a city administrator.

A south St. Louis alderwoman wants to make major structural changes to how the city is run.

Daniela Velázquez of the 6th Ward introduced the measure stripping power from the mayor on Friday.

Under Velazquez’s proposal, the mayor would remain the political and policy head of the city.
St. Louis faces persistent challenges: a declining population, economic disparities, and inefficiencies in service delivery. The recent botched snow removal highlights the urgent need for better city operations. Alderwoman Daniela Velázquez's proposal for a city manager offers a bold, practical solution to professionalize governance and enhance service delivery.

Opinion: Why St. Louis needs a city manager to modernize city government

ST.
ST. LOUIS — Voters will soon decide on Proposition V, a ballot initiative that could help address the city’s significant vacant property problem.
